Greenock Highlanders Film

Greenock Highlanders is a multimedia research project exploring the history of Gaelic in Inverclyde.

The project is working closely with Whinhill Primary School, Greenock’s provider of Gaelic Medium Education. Gaelic Medium Education (GME) is a form of education in Scotland that allows pupils to be taught primarily through the medium of Scottish Gaelic, with English taught as the secondary language.

About the Greenock Highlanders Project

Greenock Highlanders is a collaborative project between Inverclyde Gaelic Learners Group, Whinhill Primary School and Access Technology Scotland CIC. In common with many things in the last 2 years, it has had to adapt and change considerably and manage its purpose and objectives to cope with the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We began in November 2019 – the aims at that stage were to work, in classrooms, with pupils from Whinhill Primary, mutually learning more about the history of the Gaels in Inverclyde and producing series of digital media pieces for exhibition in June 2020 – whilst providing an educational and enjoyable learning experience for all the young people involved! Within our first few months, it began to be clear that 2020 was not going to be a normal year. The exhibition taking place on 24-26th March 2022 is now a combination of the work produced pre-covid, and the reconvening of the project in the second half of 2021.

The outcomes for the project are now a new website for Inverclyde Gaelic, that includes the work and story of the Greenock Highlanders Project, and several short film pieces produced in collaboration with the young people and teachers from Whinhill Primary - and featuring other local voices - looking at the history of Gaelic in Inverclyde and the importance of Gaelic Medium Education. During this time several groups of young people have contributed to the project, had new experiences and learned skills in photography, audio and video recording, researching and presentation.

Gaelic Songwriting Project

Winhill Primary’s Gaelic School, as part of the Gaelic Highlanders project, took part in an exciting Gaelic songwriting and music making project this year. In this project they learned how to use Garageband to create music, how to write lyrics, and how to craft a song.

The result is the song “Sunshine on the Horizon”, sung in Gaelic, which you can listen to by clicking the video below!

During the project, tutor Stuart Guffie visited Winhill Primary Gaelic School a total of 10 times to deliver the project. With the help from amazing teachers Mr. Alastair MacPhee and Mrs. Hannah Smith, the students embarked on a songwriting project which taught them all about digital music making using Garageband on their iPads.

Each student created many pieces of music, working as a group to create songs as they learned more advanced concepts every week. The project was capped off with the group writing a piece of music to showcase to you, named “Sunshine on the Horizon”. The students wanted to write a song about summer, and all the fun things that you do when you’re off school!

The project was a lot of fun for the tutors, and the students really enjoyed using Garageband and taking part in creative projects.
